Week 5 Feburary

February got off to a slow start – I was away for the first weekend so didn’t get out at all unfortunately. Birding in my Plaistow circle has been limited to birds seen while driving to and from work, and I’m slowly approaching 50-mark in the Salem circle.

Month total: 10(!) | NO new birds, standing strong at 56!

Salem Circle

I spend more time during the week birding in this patch (so far) than my Home patch, and being that its my hometown and ole-stomping grounds I tend to know more spots to check during the winter.

The only two additions were the state’s 2nd Common Grackle of the year (NH of course…a much more common winter visitor in MA), as well as a lonely female Common Merganser – seen in a small area of open water in a private pond.

The drive home has been right at sunset, so I’ve been keeping my eyes open for owls and it has paid off! In fact I saw this Barred Owl two nights in a row, in the same tree, and even on the same branch!  It’s been a good year for Barred Owls and this is at least the 4th one in the Salem circle so far this year.

A rando-Bald Eagle flyover was a nice surprise while attempting to take photos of the owl in the dark. Tried as I might, I dipped once again on Redpolls. They are being seen sporadically in various places across New England but I’ve yet to come across any.

Month total: 36 | 2 new birds puts me at 49
